against those in your district. >> we definitely have a few big projects for issues -- or issues we're paying a lot of attention to and we will continue to devote a lot of attention to, both myself and my staff. one of biggest ones is the planned development of the new campus for california and pacific medical center. that has dominated a lot of city-wide dialogue in the past few years. that project is slated to go forward or get through the entitlement process this year in city hall. if you are not familiar, we currently have a california campus and a pacific campus, and the plan is to build a bigger campus and consolidate those services into one larger hospital at the old cathedral hill spa on van ness, and that is going to have a huge impact, both in terms of the neighborhood in district 2, not only the new campus, but what happens to the pacific and california campus. also, is a huge job creator. we're making sure to do it in a way to we have every constituent buy into the project, create a ton of new jobs, and move forward with a health care system that benefits all of us. othe

handle. in the daytime i work for a big law firm of the type that tony probably would not hold in the highest of esteem, but i'm delighted to be here. you know, i think if you talked to most authors, they will tell you that there is something hot-wired into our system that says we need to try to tell a story. there is nothing at all in my background. i am an absolutely accidental writer. there is nothing in my background which suggests i should be writing novels. i grew up in chicago. i write books about san francisco. i studied accounting at the university of illinois. i have been a corporate and securities attorney for 28 years. i've now written seven best-selling novels about murder trials, death penalty cases, and courtroom drama. i have never handled a criminal case in my life. looks good getting up to highway 18. at 5:08 let's go to steve. >> another big fog bank out there and it's giving us also some drizzle so we have to deal with that. today will be very similar to what we had over the weekend. breezy to windy at times, already gusts to 30. about the same tomorrow, by the end of the week looks like that fog will be getting a little shallower, it does look warmer 80s and 90s coming back for us in the sacramento san joaquin valley. we keep dealing with a low coming in from the pacific west, that ramps up the fog. then high pressure in the middle of country tries to head back west but it's been trying to do that for the last two months. we have some fog in the coast, but it has no problem getting back out. everybody coast and inland 80 degrees. west south wind or a west wind when it's 27 at travis and southwest at vacaville. any time they get a south wind in this kind of a pattern that's a cool breeze. once the low kicks out, temperatures will gradually start to come up. it's a gradual the warm warm up. breezy to windy and that will be out of the west. drizzl

big, so insects can get in. but it's beautiful. >> that can be solved with a screen on the back. >> good idea. it's beautiful, good use of an old piece of equipment. here at the bottom, brick veneer is falling off, water will run in the cracks. if it were my house, i would explore what was happening here. all these openings, they are to read meters and so on and are big enough for racoons to get in. these are big holes. water intrusion is a serious problem. everything about this building is well-maintained, lighting in the front, t.v. cameras. this kind of lighting is no longer allowed. the energy code says you have to have lighting that is high- efficacy, meaning lots of lumens per watt. you can't just screw bulbs in any longer. it may not be done. i want to mention, it's not just the front of your building, it's your yard, too. the preventative maintainence would say, get some hot nails or screws or something designed for exterior use and screw them on. fix it before it breaks is the goal. everybody has a shed. the code says you can have a shed as long as it's not over 100 squ

days until the big deadline. congressional leaders are still struggling to cut a deal to raise the nation's debt limit. republicans and democrats are working on dueling plans as a deadline of august 2 looms over their head. after which the united states could begin to default on its obligations. house speaker john boehner is reported to be working on a plan that includes a short-term expense with spending cuts with another extension and more cuts in about six months. >> there is going to be a two-stage process. it is not physically possible to do all of this in one step. >> but senate majority leader harry reed says boehner's plan is a nonstart ner the senate. reed is working on his own propose thal will raise the debt ceiling by more than $2 trillion through 2012. but spending cuts and no tax increases. the house and the senate have a goal to take up legislation by the end of the week. still work to be done there. >>> big difference from hawaii. that's where lawrence was in the last couple of weeks. >> yes. drizzle and cold. >> did you notice the sunburn? >> no, not are really

't happen. >> no. and when the markets do open, it will be a big indication of what happened. the dow jones is down to 86 points, to 12,595. that's come down from the earlier drop of 100 points right at the sound of the opening bell. overnight all of the major asian markets closed down. again, they will reopen again. they are definitely looking towards washington, d.c. to see what happened. the biggest loser, the shanghai composite. australia lost 1.5%. japan finished up. the german market has wandered back into positive territory, a few times within the last few hours. the french and british markets remain down from the closing. now, related in all of this cody traders are taking action. crude oil prices fell below $99 but are now offer -- hovering above that point. some credit agencies are warning that they will drop the u.s. rating from aaa to aa in the next couple of days if the uncertainty continues. one commodity benefiting is gold, gold prices are up $16 so far this morning. record prices there. just about 1600 -- $1,618 an ounce. coming up, we'll have more on whether the debt talks

with all of the impacts of a hospital decide they want -- they want a big hospital and want to have to take care of everything else. i am very careful to know how each supervisor feels about the impact on the project. i would like cpmc to be successful because they do not have a lot of time. we would do the best we can and review every aspect of this so that they have the best chance of success. >> the issue of the state budgets have affected many local businesses. is there any way that the city could help more nonprofits? >> that is why i am proposing a set sales tax. the state did make some severe cuts. we do not know when those cuts will start that impacting the nonprofits. as you know, through our city budget, if you ask many of the nonprofits, they're pretty happy. we restored a lot of the original cuts. their services reflect the values that i hold, board of supervisors hold. now the state is making cuts, some in the same places that we've restored. we cannot promise to back fill all of those cuts. we can promise to go through the same process and asked what are the critical services

or big business. you had a lot of candidates on an even keel. what i felt quickly was the strategy to being successful was to build coalitions, and also to approach your communication in a multi land will approach. in my district, it is one of the most ethnically diverse parts of san francisco. we incorporated that. my campaign team was diverse. i had seniors. i had young people. i had different types of volunteers. i had folks that could speak chinese, spanish, someoan, all reaching out to bring people in. there is a certain level of malta and -- of momentum that help people. i would never ask my volunteers to do something i was not willing to do. we were at the bus stop at the morning handing out literature. i think that is critical, to bring into city hall that, yes, i am elected to lead, but more importantly to serve. that is my number one focus point. i am here to serve. when you call me, i am at 4 service. >> what about issues facing san francisco, facing your district, and how you are going to balance the needs of san francisco at large against the needs of your district? >>

just over my shoulder here, a minor feature, but it has a big impact on. we'll look for that low cloud deck to move back in. we had them for the low to mid- 80, 70s in the east bay, the pen anyone sue sue la. back to the coastline. several features moving in our direction. one this little ripple coming from the north, bring cooler air into the area for the beginning of the week. nothing dramatic, a sudden little change. subtropical moisture moving up which will move into the area for the weekend. could bring with it a chance solve some showers. but for the next couple days we'll look for a deeper marine layer and a slight cooling out there. again, pretty close to today's temperatures as we continue with our below-normal temperature range here. come the weekend that should change as conditions are expected to warm once again which means we'll be headed back into the mid-to low 90s for some of the interior, by the end of the weekend, as the fog will give way to sunnier skies and that warm up should kick in just in time for next weekend. for tomorrow, temperatures much like today in the m

know who you can call to get a cab. i am a big believer in pedestrian bicycling as options to get around town. many cities in the world have far more people working or on bicycles into blocking or on bicycles. they are pleasant most of transit and are efficient. -- many cities in the world have far more people walking or on bicycles. they are pleasant and efficient forms of transportation. that will take cars off the road and make it easier for those who drive. if we want to create a world- class transportation system, we have to make a commitment to each of these modes of transit to allow us to move where we need to go. >> is it safe for pedestrians on the streets? >> it is not. in recent years, we have had too many pedestrian accidents. there are estimates it costs our cities several hundred millions a year because of traffic accidents, injuries, and fatalities. i am asking one of our transit agencies to study where we're spending our dollars around the district and whether we invested more money would help to reduce our overall costs that come when a pedestrian is hit by a car.
